Something‘like a record is said to have been established in America a few weeks ago. The Thoroughbred Record is responsible for saying that Mr S. C. Hilreth declined an offer of 300,000 dollars (about 60,000 sovs, at the prewar rate of exchange) for his throe-year-old chestnut colt Purchase, winner this year of seven races worth nearly 26,000 dollars. Purchase is by Ormonodale out of Cherryola, by Tanzraeister. The secretary of the Garrison Band wishes to acknowledge with thanks the receipt of £2 5s from, three musical enthusiasts at the Show yesterday afternoon, who desired to express their appreciation of the band’s performance in a practical ■way. This amount will form the nucleus of a fund to take the band to the, Dunedin contest next jMarch. Mr Partington, the . band’s conductor- elect, leaves Australia next Monday, e.n route to Wanganui, and on his arrival the band will settle down to work in real earnest to again represent Wanganui oil the contest platform.

The task of dismantling the twelve ancient forte which surround Mayence and protect the crossing of the Rhine was begun in October by the Germans under the supervision of the French army- of occupation. The work, which is being .carried out in conformity with the provisions of the Peace Treaty .requiring the dismantlement of Germany's Rhine fortresses, will probably require more than a year, as it is tedious and necessitates much blasting. Sand and gravel, resulting from the demolition of the fort at Gonscnheim, seven miles from Mayence, will be used commercial purposes.
