CIVIC AFFAIRS.

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL,

The usual meeting of the Wanganui Borough Council was held last night, the Mayor, Mr C. E. Mack ay, presiding. There were also present: Crs. Donaldson, Green, Sharpe, Burnett, Spriggens, Williams, Gower, Lifiiton, Richardson, Luxford, and Aitken. REPORTS. Reports were received from committees dealing with various matters. WORKS.—lncluded in tbe report of tfte Works Committee was a recommendation which was adopted, that the Council pay to its painters the rate of wages ruling in Wanganui, 2s per hour. GAS.—Gas Supply to Tramways: The Committee has approved the action of the manager in lighting up additional benches of retorts in order bo supply the Tramway Department with the extra, quantity of gas required during the period of repairs to plant. The charge for gas to be actual cost, to be ascertained by the Gas Engineer and the Town Clerk. Payment to Gas Stokers for Special’ Holidays: The Committee recommend that the application for payment for Peace and Anzac Days be granted. Motor Lorry for Delivery of Coke.—The Committee recommend that an additional motor be procured. Vertical Retorts; The Gas Eingineer reported having received communications from the manufacturers, and that a representative has been asked to visit Wanganui to go into details of the Council’s requirements. Coal to Palmerston North: We recommend the Council to inform the Palmerston North Coimcil that as a means of settling the dispute as to charge for coal supplied to one another, this Council is willing to accept delivery of the' excess quantity supplied by it. CORRESPONDENCE. Included in the correspondence received were letters dealing with the following subjects: LIBRARY.—The secretary of the Education Board wrote informing the Council that the Board had not been successful in getting all the local suburban schools to join in the Council’s school circulating library scheme A further conference of teachers is to be held.

LOCAL BILL. —The Borough Solicitor advised proceeding by way of a local Bill at the next session of- Parliament, validating the Council’s agreement with Mrs Neame. Tho necessary authority was given, the Bill to be ready for tho session which it is proposed to hold in February next. SPORTS GROUNDS.—The Wanganui Hockey Association, in applying for the use of Cook’s Gardens for next season, pointed out the necessity for making provision for more sports grounds, and suggested this should be considered. Next year the Association hoped to have seven men’s teams and six ladies’ teams in operation.

TRAMWAY AGREEMENT.—The Gon-ville-Cas tied iff Tramway Board wrote agreeing to re-enter into an agreement with the Council for the supply of power and cars on the terms of the Council’s offer, for three years, at increased prices, the Council to have a further option to purchase the system. The' letter was referred to tbe Tramway Committee. COOK’S GARDENS.—A request for the use of Cook’s Gardens on Saturday, February 6th, by the Caledonian Society was granted.

EXHIBITION HALL.—An application was made by the Horticultural Society for use of the Museum building, when the present lease fell in, for Flower Shows.—Referred to Reserves Committee.

ROUTINE.—A number of minor matters were dealt with and referred to the respective committees.
