WANGANUI TECHNICAL COLLEGE.

AN INTERESTING EXHIBITION,

WORK OF STUDENTS

The annual exhibit from the Technical College was a first-class advertisement for the work of the College. Tne varied nature of the work done in the College could not have been better illustrated than it was on the 80ft of space occupied bv the specimens of students’ work exhibited. The best of the students’ work naturally finds a place in the competitions section of the Art and Technical bronch of t*he Show, so that the displav made is no so - good as could be made by the College, if all its work could be shown in one place. The work shown was mostly that of the Technical High School students and it showed a high standard. The work in the domestic section was particularly attractive. Exhibits from the cookery, millinery and dressmaking classes were very good, and it must be, gratifying to the community to know that in the Technical Colleges the training in domestic work is so practical that articles so excellently designed and accurately worked as those in the millinery and dressmaking sections should he done in the ordinary classes by girls of 15 years of age. The cookery exhibits have naturally to be done specially for the Srow) and they were really splendid. Throughout the competitive classes were to be seen products’s of the College cookery classes in competition with all comers. The exhibit of art needlework was perhaps the most attractive of all the domestic class work. There were beautiful samples of such work, showing both distinctly artistic taste and careful and painstaking work. The applied art section was filled with exhibits of leatherwork and pewter work. Classes for these have been increasing in popularity, and the exhibit represented mainly the work of the day school domestic class. In the art section some fine work was put on exhibition. This was mostly from evening compulsory students, and was an excellent illustration of the varied kinds of art work undertaken in both day and evening classes. ENGINEERING AND WOODWORK. In the engineering and woodwork classes there were exhibited some very good work from the boys’ side. The specimens. of metal work showed some exceedingly fine fitting with inlays of brass im steel. There were also some fine specimens of turning and screw cutting done by day school engineering class boys, and by returned soldiers attending the College. The exhibit included some exhibits of turning and fitting 0 f parts for a 3jh.p. Anderson’s engine, which attracted a good deal of attention, from the engineers present. A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR BOYS With its fine motor shop and equipment, qne could not but be impressed by the opportunities offered to boys to fit themselves in the ordinary engineering classes for taking up a course in motor work, where the training in fitting and turning would be applied. The whole exhibit reflects great praise upon instructors and the Technical High School students mainly responsible for it.
