SHEARERS’ AND AGRICULTURAL LABOURERS' ACCOMMODATION ACT. A considerable amount of time bat been taken up with inspections under tliis Act. Fourteen shearing sheds have been visited and one sawmill. Notices to make improvements in each case have been served on owners. Ng inspections have been made in respect to Agricultural Labourers’ Accommodation. The present Act does not give inspectors sufficient latitude in order that they, may see that the accommodation is in every particular satisfactory, and I therefore recommend that amendment# similar to those contained in Mr Vcjtch’a Bill that was before the House last session, might be adopted. SCAFFOLDING ACT. This Act is working well. Twentyfour notices of intention to erect scaffoldings have been received, and the inspector has made one or two inspections in each case. One case, for a breach of the Act, was taken before the Magistrate’s Court, when the defendant was fined .£l. LABOUR. During' the year thirteen persons wcw» assisted. I may say the office has not boon made much ns© of during the year by either employers or workers as it might have been, for I have heard that private registry offices have been very busy in the engagement of workers. GENERAL. The continued growth of the Department and the large amonnt of statistical work required during the' year has materially increased the clerical work of the Department, and it has boon fqund absolutely necessary to work overtime in order to keep pace with the extra work. The best thanks of tbe Department arc due to the District Health Officer for iris ready assistance when required. I hav© also to thank the officers of the local trade unions and the secretary of the Employers’ Association for courtesy always extended to me when making inquiries into tbe workings of etc. A point for good housewives.
