NOT LOVE BUT RESPECT
■ WHERE IS HYMN OF HATE? -CHANGED GERMAN ATTITUDE. LONDON,' November 7. Letters from soldiers a»d others in occupied German territory agree (that there ia nothing which the Germans desire less than thaifc the British should leavej owing to their absolute fairness and admitted capability for administration. An interesting illustration of this is provided by the case of two British officers who recently motored to a town in the neutral zone. The inhabitants turned out and thinking that they had. come to occupy the place, and were profoundly disappointed when they were disillusioned. This does not mean, as one correspondent emphasises, that ihe Germans love us, but they realise that we stand between Ihem and worse evils. The correspondent mentions, as a sidelight on the baffling psychology of tlhe German character, the fact that all itihe L'uineland is at present flocking to Cologne Cathedral, where a Franciscan monk is holding immense audiences spellbound by preaching that the Kingdom of Heaven is within, and that all true power of victory is itihat of the spirit.
