SIDNEY STEAHER SERVICE.
MAILL.NO BACK ON RUN. WAR RECORD RECALLED. AUCKLAND, Novexhber 10. The arrival of the Maheno from Sydney yesterday marked a further stage in the return to pre-war conditions in chipping. The steamer has been placed, permanently on the Sydney-Auckland passenger service, the run which she was on l el ore the war. The last time the Maheno was at Auckland -was in April of this year, when, as a hospital ship, she arrived from England, with a draft of wounded soldiers. She was tlicu punted white, and was made conspicuous by the various Red Cross signs about her. Since then she has been to Port Chalmers and refitted to ter pre-war condition, and is now painted the Union Company’s passenger steamer colours. The Maheno was on the Sydney-Anck-land run up till nine mouths after the war commenced. In May, 1915, she was withdrawn, and sent to Port Chalmers to be fitted out as a hospital ship, and was commissioned for that service two months later. She continued as a hospital ship for over three years and nine months, and during that time she carried about 29,000 men. Her refitting was completed at the beginning of September, and she was placed on the Wel-lington-Sydney service until, she was withdrawn last week to take up her present run. Captain D. McLean, who has been in command pf the Maheno for some years, is still master of the vessel.
