TOLLED BT MOTOR-CAR.
CORONER’S YERDICT.
(Per United Press Association.)
WELINGTON, November 12.
An inquest on the wife of Detective Black, who was knocked down by a taxicab on November 6th and killed, was held before Mr W. G. Biddell (Coroner) to-day. In giving his verdict the Coroner said the weight of evidence went to show that the car was travelling at a fairly high rate of speed. The driver stated that he sounded his horn twice, and also slowed down his speed. However, the weight of evidence was against that, and he innst accept the evidence of independent witnesses, who stated that the car did not slacken its speed. The driver of the car also stated that the accident was due to the deceased going forward, then back and forward again, but other witnesses had stated that Mrs Black had continued on her way, and the weight of the evidence was against the driver on this point also. The Coroner did not propose to bring in any direct finding of negligence on the part of the driver, as the inquest was simply held to find out what caused death. The verdict would be that the deceased, Mabel Beck, died as the result of injuries received through being knocked down by a motor car driven by Benet Barker Williams, on November 6th.
