PEACE CELEBRATIONS.

SUBSIDY FOE ONE DAI ONLY. A CHRISTCHURCH PROTEST. (Per United Press Association.) CHEISTCH URCH, July 5. The chairman of the Christchurch Peace Celebrations Committee telegraphed as follows to the Minister of Internal Affairs;—“ The Christchurch Peace Celebration Committee -views with alarm the Government’s decision to pay a subsidy on sums expended for celebrations on July 19th only. At the Government’s suggestion, the committee has already arranged for three days’ celebrations, and expenditure has already been incurred on the strength of the Government’s promised subsidy in preparation for three days’ celebrations. It is impossible to carry-out the programme arranged on one day to comply with the Government’s plan. It means cutting out the part of the celebrations for July 21st, for which an expenditure has already been incurred of .£750. We hope matters will be satisfactorily arranged, as the committed has acted in good faith by carrying out the Government’s suggestion. TWO DAYS FOE AUCKLAND. AUCKLAND, July 5. Peace celebrations will be held in Auckland on two days—Saturday, July 19, and the following Monday, which will be children’s day. It has also been arranged to have illuminations ■in the city on the three days.
