It is reported that H. Gray ’will hare the mount on Desert Gold if that mare is a starter in the A.E.C. Easter Handicap, so that another rider will have to be found, for Sasanof at Riccarton. Though nothing has been made public by the committee of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club, from what one can gather (says, the Auckland Star) there is every likelihood of the club reinstating the Hawke’s Bay Guineas on their Spring programme. The last race for this event took place in 1915, when Desert Gold won. Tiie two-year-old event, the Hastings Stakes, which has not been run for since Vagabond won in 1916, is also to bo reinstated. ‘The victory of Sasanof in the Farewell Handicap at the Hawke’s Bay Meeting, docs not give him any extra poundage in the C.J.C. Great Easter Handicap, but ho will have to carry slb extra in the Great Autumn Handicap, which will bring his weight up to 10.1. Should ho win the Easter, in which he promises to be one of the favourites, be would have his weight increased to 10.10, so the shorter race will probably be his mission. The running of Taunaha at the Hawke’s Bay Meeting has had the effect of making the son of Demosthenes a more pronounced favourite than ever for the A.R.C. Easter Handicap. On the opening day the son of Demosthenes won the Poukawa Handicap of six furlongs under 9.8, beating a good field of hacks, but his finishing effort did not altogether please the critics. The race, however, evidently did him a lot ef good, for in the Hawke’s Bay Stakes on Thursday (8.11) he proved equal to defeating all but the winner, Affectation. Judging from a distance, this latter performance appears to be a real good one, a.nd fully entitles him to the position he ■bolds in connection with the Easter Handicap. Taunaha has only 6.7 to carry, but if, as reported, L. Morris is to have the mount it will mean that ho will have at least 7.0 in the saddle, but under the light scale of weights that would not make a great difference.
