INFLUENZA SCOURGE

EPIDEMIC BEATEN AT WELLINGTON. WELLINGTON, December 2. The Mayor reports to-day that influenza is practically beaten. IMPROVED CONDITIONS IN THE SOUTH. DUNEDIN, December 2. The influenza position is regarded very hopefully. The notifications for Otago and Southland for two days have been only thirty.. The improvement is more marked in town than in the country. IN WANGANUI IMPROVEMENT STILL BEING MAINTAINED. Reports from the suburban and central bureaux were more cheerful this morning, and indicated that continued improvement was being maintained. Central. —Seven cases were reported to the Central depot this morning. The number for yesterday was 16, but this included some country cases and some observation cases. Gonville. —A quiet morning was experienced at Gonville this morning, no fresh cases being reported. The hospital return showed that there were, 13 patients in hospital, one admitted, and one transferred. Of the patients in hospital 10 were from the Gonville district, two from Waitotara County, and one from Castlecllff. The hospital is staffed with a very willing band of workers, who are working hard for the comfort of their patients. In this respect special mention should be made of the unceasing efforts of Mrs Allen (in charge of that important branch, the kitchen), Miss Tilley. Mrs Muir, and Miss Bell. Castlecllff. —Only one fresh case was reported this morning. Two patients, who got put of bed before they should, suffered a relapse yesterday, but were all right this morning. Wanganui North.—One mild case was reported from this depot this morning.. Two cases which had been under observation were sent to hospital late last night. Aramoho.—Yesterday three cases were reported but these were mild, and were promptly taken in hand. The cases reported were of children. This morning one case was reported, and this proved to be a mild one. There are no serious cases at Aramoho. Wanganui East. Since yesterday eighteen visits were paid, and there were three hospital cases and two patients were reported to be convalescent, TO-DAY’S HOSPITAL REPORTS. Reports from the various hospitals at mid-day to-day were as follows; Stewart Hospital.—Under treatment 35 including 3 staff, discharged 1, transfers nil, death 1. Alexander Hospital—Under treatment 24, discharged 2, deaths 1. Technical College Hospital.—Under treatment 71, including 1 staff, admitted 16, transferred 6, deaths 2. Native Hospital.—Under treatment 28. admitted 2, discharged 1, deaths nil. Convalescent Hospital; Under treatment 42, admitted 5, discharged 6. DRUID’S HALL HOSPITAL CLOSED. The Druids’ Hall Hospital was closed to-day and the building is now undergoing a thorough fumigation. The three patients which were under treatment were transferred to the Public Hospital and to the Technical College Hospital and one was sent home. MAORI CONVALESCENT HOSPITAL. Arrangements arc being made for the establishment of a convalescent hospital, for tho Maoris on the racecourse and this wall soon be ready for occupation. Although definite information as to the epidemic in the county districts is difficult to obtain, it can be stated that the position is satisfactory, and indications are not wanting to show that slowly but surely tho dark cloud of epidemic is passing. Readers are, however, urged not to neglect precautions. ’ WANGANUI INFLUENZA RELIEF FUND.
