THE DOWNFALL OF EMPIRES
O, weird confusions of this whirling scene On a thousand miles of front of raging war! One empire has gone down, and is no more; The second crumbles, was, and now hath been; The third, the briefest, strangest of them all. Who, trusting to his might and crafty skill. Cajoled and forced them to his iron will; Whose arrogance upon them brought their doom; Who spurned the laws of God and of mankind. Before our eyes is passing to his tomb; And three great- Empires in our breathless sight In not five years do pass into the night. And nothing but a name do leave behind; And this great World goes onward as before, —A.Y.T.
