'NEW SOUTH WALES' SHARE. A statement of the contribution of New South Wales to the war in mm. and money haii been compiled by the Government statistician. He reports as follows: "For the first time since the date of responsible government in New South Wales there was a decline in population. The year 1916 showed a loss of 40,000 males, with' a concurrent gain of 18,000 females, or a total decrease of 22,000 persons. This loss, however, in the male population is matter for pride rather lhan for apology, because it was the result of the despatch during the ve.ar of 58,000 volunteers for service abroad in defence of the Empire. 'T4i» total population at the end of 1916 was "T.-S-'J'O'K), and in all thin State sent, up to Hmt date, men to the fighting line, independently of munition workers and others who have gone to England and France on warwork. "The State has given of its wealth no less generously than of its manhood. At the, close of the year 1916 the various ]*atriotic funds subscribed by the public since the beginning of the war amounted to .£2,604,923, or .£1 8s per head of population, of which sum ,£1,064,959 was for foreign relief. The remaining funds, «£L,039;964, were allotted principally for local relief. "Great quantities of provisions, sheepskin clothing, and miscellaneous comforts were also donated and despatched overseas to Australians on different fronts and to Allied sufferers. "In addition to these patriotic measures, the citizens of the State contributed to tire four issues of the Commonwealth war loan the sum of J35,250^00.
