SATURDAY HOLIDAY.
TO THE BDITOH. Sir, —In a recent issue, Mr W. S. Dustin stated that Balmain, a suburb of Sydney, with a population of 60,000, was not included in the universal Saturday Holiday law of Australia, and its shops were not compelled to close, on Saturdays. I doubted this statement, and immediately seut to Australia for information on the point, and am assured that the whole of Sydney, including all suburbs, is under the Saturday afternoon holiday, the only exemptions being fish shops, fruit shops, bakers, and restaurants. There is at present a leading business man of Sydney on a visit to AVanganui, and he confirms this information, adding that Balmain is a large manufacturing centre, and is the chief shipping port (Darling Harbour) for produce from New Soubh Wales, He states emphatically that the Saturday holiday is entirely satisfactory to business men and residents in every part of Sydney, including Balmain, and he cannot understand anyone making a statement otherwise. —Yours, etc., WILLIAM H. GIBSON.
