WANGANUI COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETINO. <■{?■;^ The usual meeting of the Wanga* nui County Council was held to-day. In the absence of the chairman (Mr T. Bamber), Mr W. J- Poison occupied the chair. The following were also present:—Crs Robinson, Ross, O'Neil, Collier, Hine, A. Mackintosh, D. Mackintosh, Collins. On the motion of Cr Robinson it was decided to grant a subsidy oft £75 towards the Kukupu Road.

ENGINEER'S REPORT. The Engineer (Mr R. R. Daw6on) re* ported as follows: Kaitoke Riding. —The metalling of aj portion of the No. 1 Line and the Concord Road, for which a contract baa been let, will be commenced early nexfc mouth. It is proposed to reform and metal the unmetaJled portions Kgutaros Road at an early date. The maintenance of the No. 1 Line has een somewhat neglected of late, owing to the difficulty in obtaining suitable labour, but it is hoped the condition of the road, will be considerably improved in tSie near future. Repairs on the Restar length of tile road will be effected immediately. Kaukatea Riding.—The contract for metalling the No. 5 Line is progressing' favourably, and should be completed next week. The top end of the Long Acre Road is at present being trimmed up. Negotiations are at present being made for delivery of approximately 150 cubic yards of ;.-oad metal for the Long? Acre Road. The re-tarring on the No. 3 Line has not yet been commenced owing to the difficulty of obtaining a tar sprayer plant. Two days' road rolling has been done on t&e Waikupa Road during the month, but owing to the unsuitable weather the road roller has otherwise been idle.

Mangawhero Riding.—Approximately--750 cubic yards of road gravel toave been carted on" to the Parapara Road, and the whole of this metal has been clay blinded during the month. It is proposed to use the road roller for a fortnight to roll down the whole of the new metal. The work of obviating the road splash from the waterfall at Kakatahi has been completed, the effect of which will be proved by the winter floods. The material for the Mangahawi Telephone Line is being carted to tfee site, and the erection, of the line has been commenced. I propose to make an inspection of the merged Mangawhero> district early next week. Mangamahu Riding.—The Council'* horse teams are at present working or* the Wangaehu River Road. The roadgrader has been used for clearing aboui five miles of water-taWes, and the teams are at present employed carting coareei grit on to the road, which is not suitable for heavy traffic, but will considerably improve the road for light traffic during the winter months. Tiie road metal on the Mangamahu Road is a* prreent being trimmed up and blinded! with clay. Repairs have been effected on the bridge near the five-mile peg, owing to the mud-sill having decayed at one end, which allowed the bridge to subside at one corner. Purua Riding.—The Mangamahu Road is being improved by widening the road in places and clay-blinding the loose metal. The metal repairs, as allocated for the Matarawa Road, will bd commenced during the present month. Upper Wangaehu Riding.—ln company with. Cr. Hine, an inspection was made of the roads in the Upper Wangaehu Riding (trader the jurisdiction of i the County), and the same were found ,' to be in a very good state of repair.
