THE SIXTH BALLOT.
DRAW BEGAN ON TUESDAY. 4618 RESERVISTS GALLED FOR. The sixth ballot to draw men from tho First Division of the Expeditionary Force Reserve to rMI up the shortage.", in the drafts for che 30ih Reinforcements was opened at Wellington an Tuesday afternoon. Mr Malcolm Eraser (Government Statistician) conducted tho ballot, Mr S. E McCarthy, S.M., surpervismg. The general public; wern represented by tho Mayor (Mr ,i P. Luke) and Labour by Mr John Read, the new\'y-eiected president of the Wallington Trades and Labour Council. The number of boxes used was 168, tho number of oards in each box being 350. The Bay of Plenty was tho only recruiting district for which the fuli quota was obtained by the voluntary system ; and tho total number of reservists to bo balloted for was 4812, the actual number of recruits required being about one-third of that number. Tho following are the numbers to bo ballotted for from each of the recruiting districts:--Auckland 268 Hauraki 110 North Auckland 104 Waikato 140 Wellington 468 Manawatu 260 Hawke's Bay 84 Taranaki 176 Christchurch 504 South Canterbury 268 North Canterbury 220 Nelson 256 Dunedin ..' 264 Southland 476 North Otago 144 Clutha ... 148 Wairarapa 152 Poverty Bay 244 Wanganm " 204 West Coast *316 In each case, however, the actual shortage is roughly one-third of the above figures, three re&erviete having to bo drawn for evesy recruit required, in order to allow for exemptions and those rejected as medically unfit.
