AMUSEMENTS AND MEETINGS

THE GRAND THEATRE. • -■ Last evening the new programme at the Grand was screened to a large audience. “The Fighting Hope” features Laura- Hope thews, who appears in p pathetic role that brings out all her best talent. It is a trying part, and most of .the ; incidents range round the character. The other star feature' is Louise Lovely, the popular favourite, in the latest Bluebird feature, “The Gilded Spider.” This picture will be screened at 7 p.m. sharp and will continue until 8 pm. The supporting programme is up to the Grand Theatre siaiidard—“Experiments in Chemistry,'’ “Ruth llidgely’s Return (two-act drama); “Bobby Bumps and the Pointer Pup (cartoon), and a comical comedy, “A Mortgage on His Daughter.” Intending patrons should go early to-night to secure the best seats. The plan is at Allden’s. -■ HIS MAJESTY’S. His Majesty’s Theatre held a' good assemblage last evening, and should continue to do so for the. next two nights, for the attraction is splendid. To say that famous Edna May (the original “Belle of New York") scored a pronounced success is to state the case very mildly. The drama itself is a magnificent specimen of solid melodrama. Its seven thousand feet of perfect motion pictures tells a story that cannot fail to delight everyone who sees it. The east is strong, and Edna May at its head is in herself a tower of strength. The characters in the scone showing “Grogan’s Dive” and the “Mission Hall,” vibrate life. Edna May, in the dual parts of Society girl and a Salvation, lassie, adds further lustre to her fame' and distinction to the screen. “Salvation Joan” may be heartily recommended as a picture that should not be missed. ; A tremendously cute cartoon, “Mut and Jeff and the National Guard,” and the latest Pathe Gazette, complete a programme of outstanding excellence.

EVERYBODY’S. The new star drama in five acts, “Hero of Submarine D2,” at Everybody’s, is a play of tremendous thrill. Excitement runs through this fine and thoroughly up-to-date drama, and it draws forth such emphatic applause as is seldom heard. “The Hero of Submarine D2” made a big hit. The reconstructed Vitagraph Corporation made the picture, and incidentally stole a march on rival competitors by using for the first time for screen purposes the interior of an absolutely genuine submarine as a setting for thrilling, sensational scenes. Tho mountings, costumes and scenery are upon the finest scale and the result is a picture production that could hardly be excelledY BRANCH, W.C.T.U. A very successful meeting of the Y Branch of the W.C.T.U. was held last evening. There were 28 present, including some members from the senior union, and a very enjoyable social evening was snent. The next meeting will bo held on Monday, 26tli February, in the Baptist Schoolroom.
