The Melbourne Argus of Thursday, January 18th. says:—Joseph O’Oonnell, a cross-country horseman, was fatally injured in an’ accident that occurred at the Caulfield racecourse yesterday morning. O’Connell was schooling the hurdle-racer Woolenook over hurdles, when the horse struck one of the obstacles, and O’Connell, who was thrown out of the saddle, was badly injured about the head. He was attended to on the course by Dr. H. D. Thomas, of Gltfnhuntly, who found that he was suffering compression of the brain, due to bleeding inside the scalp. O’Connell was taken to the Alfred Hospital, in an unconscious condition, and was subsequently operated on, but he died last night shortly before 10' o’clock. O’Connell had been riding in cross-country races inVictoria for several years past, having; come to this State from New Zealand! Woolenook is only a moderate performer, but he has had a fair amount of experience "at hurdle-racing- He won two events of this description at country meetings last season. In the Hurdle Race at Caulfield on Boxing Day Woolenook was ridden by O’Connell, and made the running for over a mile, completing the course safely.
