The Lord Mayor and the Corporation of Sheffield presented Mr Massey with a chest of cutlery, Mrs Massey with a silver dessert service, and Miss Massey with a silver toilet set. Large numbers of eighteen-year-old lads are rallying to the colours, though the proclamation has not yet been issued. The Bishop of Bury testified to the improved . treatment of officers at Blankenburg. They are now freely ah lowed ’ to walk abroad on parole. In some cases they can take long country walks and short tours. GENEVA, January 24. ■Partial mobilisation began to-day. Troops departed for the frontier amid enthusiasm. STOCKHOLM, January 24. The newspaper Tioningi reports the discovery of an extensive system of espionage in Sweden. A spy named Hendriksen and others were arrested and charged with informing German agents of the movements of Entente ships ;n the Baltic and Gulf of Bothnia and assisting torpedoers. PETROGRAD, January 24. At the opening of the Upper House, the President said he hoped that despite the disappointing beginning, 1917 would bring peace. “The fateful hour of Germany is approaching. Our iron will shall bring the war to a prosperous conclusion.” (Reuter's Telegram.) AMSTERDAM, January 24. The Voerwarts publishes an army order providing a year's imprisonment or a fine of 1500 marks for non-military enemy subjects who refuse to work. (The Times.) CAIRO, January 24.
