LABOUR CONFERENCE.

IMPORTANT DISCUSSION. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) LONDON, January 24. At the Labour Conference, Mr Wardle read Mr Lloyd George’s telegram congratulating the Conference on the decision to share in the' responsibility of directing the Empire’s affaire. A resolution was. adopted protesting against handing over to the charity of recruiting authorities the re-settling of soldiers and munition-workers after the war, declaring that trades unions, cooperating with reformed labour exchanges, would be the best organisation to deal with the problem. Hon. Hodge stated that he intended to use trade union machinery to the utmost during demobilisation. Mr Bellamy moved, on behalf of the executive, demanding provision to protect three million munition-workers and other war workers, as well as soldiers, urging the Government to formulate plans in advance. If discharged soldiers fell into the clutches of the Poor Law there would be a popular outburst of indignation. The resolution was carried. Mr Kirkwood, one of the Clyde Labour leaders, who was expelled from Glasgow at the instance of the military authorities, explained the circumstances of his deportation. Scenes of great excitement followed, some delegates demanding that the Labour representatives be withdrawn from the Government unless Mr Kirkwood and his colleagues are reinstated,u i. Hon. Henderson ended the seen© by suggesting that the Conference institute an inquiry. He pointed out that- the Conference had heard one side only.' 'He promised to abide by the inquiry.
