Mr G. F. McGrath has forwarded £2O to Mr W. Bradley for distribution amongst the soldiers at Alexandria. At the Magistrate’s Court this morning, i young fellow named F. K. Simmins was charged with the theft of a motor-bicycle valued at .£45 at Kauponui oil November lath. Mr. Mackay apiieared for accused, idle police were granted a remand by Mr. Haselden, S.M. until Saturday next. Mr. Jackay applied for bail, which was granted. Ii will be remembered that, about a mo.ith ago, J. Barrett, lately a master baker here, was summoned for selling under-weight bivud. The defendant stated that he had joined the Expeditionary Force, and the Magistrate reserved decision for a time to see if the statement was correct. The case was mentioned at tho Magistrate’s Court this morning, when the Magistrate, Mr Haselden, was informed that* Barrett had gone to camp. Mr Haselden intimated that he would not impose any penalty. In applying for bail for his client, who had been charged with an offence at the Magistrate’s Court to-day, Mr Mackay said he was an ex-soldicr invalided back from Gallipoli. The Magistrate, Mr. laseldeu, said that returned soldiers were mlitled to more consideration than other portions of the community, but there were limits. Qualifying this statement alter on, he said that it was for the comnunity to see that a great deal more was lone for returned soldiers than for any other part of the community, but if the returned soldiers do the things they should not do it brings discredit upon a body of men wbo are held in great respect, probably even greater than they would be in their ordinary lives. Before the business at the Magistrate’s Camt commenced this morning, Mr \V. ii. Haselden, who has concluded his term as relieving Magistrate here, thanked the members of the legal profession for their kindness and courtesy to him, and for giving him a couple of pleasant month.) in Wanganui, he had done his best while ,;ere to do his »o.k impartially. He wai gratified to notice the progress the town ,iad made since he wa» here last, about live years ago. Air Cohen, on behalf of lie members of the bar, expressed pleasure that the relations between the iOiicli and bar had been so cordial. ’lhey would he glad to welcome Mr Kerr hack again, and they would be glad if at any future occasion Mr Haselden again occupied his official position in Wanganui. Mr Mackay, on bchnlf' of the locfil Justices if the Peace, paid-a tribute to the way n which Mr Haselden had assisted them, and hoped to sec him hack in Wanganui again. The case against P. McGrath for selling milk which contained added water was concluded at the .Magistrate’s Court :his morning. Mr Mackay, who appeared for difendaut, stated that the Analyst Department had forwarded a report that the third sample could not bo analysed, having lieen bottled so long. He contended that tin* case for the prosecution could not therefore succeed. His Worship, Mr Hasdden, ft.M., over ruled that point. Air Mack ay next contended that the certificate of the analyst was defective, ns it diu not give certain information about the water in the milk. He quoted author! lieu in support of his contention. A lengthy legal argument followed, the Magistrate finally over-ruling the objection. Mr Mackay then put defendant in‘o tha witness-box, and he denied (hat lie watered the milk. In answer to Mr Huttop, defendant denied offering to buy the sample back from Mr Pargeter, nor did he ask him not to forward the sample to Wellington. He did not tell anyone t'*al he had watered the milk. In giving his judgment, Mr Haselden said the cam had been well fought out. If he were staying in Wanganui he would have reserved 'is decision and considered Ihe matter Tally, hut under the circumstances h< had no time to do that. He thought it was a case for a conviction, and imposed a fine of J2O, with solicitor's fee £1 3a. and other costs amounting to 17s fid. Air Mackay notified Tiis intention of appealing, and his Worship offered to wive him every assistance in doing so.
