The Wanganui Herald (Published Daily.) FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 1915. WHAT WAR IS!

Answehikg the question “What is War?" a writer has well said: “I believe that half the people who talk about, war have not the slightest conception what it’, is. In a short sentence it may he summed up to be the combination and concentration of all the horrors, atrocities, and crimes of which human nature ip capable of enduring." And human imagination fails to fathom the depths of the suffering the present war has brought upon races and peoples in Europe who have been involved in it. Great and small, they have all suffered. They have all given their best and bravest sops to the vast armies that are locked in the deathstruggle. But some of them, in addition, have seen the red tide of war sweep over their towns and villages and their smiling country sides, submerging the homesteads and the well-loved fields beneath the wasting flood that sweeps away all means of livelihood even from these inhabitants who manage to escape with their lives. It is the little nations chiefly that have drunk this bitter cup to the dregs—nations like Belgium, Servia, and Montenegro, whose sufferings no heart can realise, and no pen sot down. There is another people, however, which has suffered bitterly through the war, although it has long since lost its nationhood—the priceless possession that still remains for these other victims of German and Austrian brutality.
