NEW FREEZING WORKS.

LICENSE GRANTED BY CONVILLE TOWN BOARD. SOME INTERESTING PARTICULARS. After favourably dealing with the, original applications,; and later bearing objections entered thereto, the Gonyillc Town Board last evening finally decided in favour of tlie Christchurch Meat Co.’s application for a slaughtering license, in . connection with its -new freezing works to , be erected on the Gonville foreshore, near imlay railway station. Mr. C. P- Brown, solicitor, waited’en the Board bn behalf of tlie Company, which, was also represented by Messrs. Knight. ; (chairman of directors), -Campbell - (secre- ’ tary), and Panton (architect). The Board’s chairman (Mr. A. G. Bignell), in moving 'that tlie application for a slaughter)ng .license be granted, detailed the steps already taken, and said that all, the necessary formalities bud been completed, and the . Stock Department's approval received. Some of the residents had entered • objections, hut per-, sonal interviews with, many of these bad convinced him that the great majority were, in favour. Information received from other towns had shown- that no objection was entertained against- freezing works 5 , there, and'the solicitor’s opinion had put the Board right from the legal standpoint- Ho felt satisfied that the works would be in the interests of the district.

Mr. J. B. Gilbcrd seconded the motion, in supporting which Mr. N.- I’. Sven son said that Gonville had only a short stretch of river frontage, which .was tin; proper place for industries to be established. So far as ho could gather there would he nothing offensive in the works, , which ire hoped would prosper, and bo the forerunner of other industries. EXPERIENCE OP OTHER PLACES. A telegram was then read from the Mayor of Tim am, in, reply to th e Town ,; Board's inquiry, stating- that there.,was' no objection■ by residents of, Tiroaru against the freezing works there, winch were just on the town boundary. Mr. W- F; Jenkins, ex-Mayor of. Wan, tara also wrote in reply to 'the Board, stating that, in the earlier days, a good deal of disagreeable smell existed, but since more improved methods of dealing with offal had been in vogue, this, had .almost-disappeared. Tiierc had been no complaints made, although quite a number of ’good houses were within a few, chains of the works, and the owners had: made no objection, to the works’ erection or extension. With the -present up-to-date methods, no fear need.be felt by Gonville residents. THE NEW WORKS. In reply to questions by. members of the Board, Mr. ~ Panton,. the Co.:'s architect,. said the arrangements in, the, new works would be ahead of any ,he had ever had to, do with. All the steam from the digester would, be perfectly under control, and smell thus he obviated,;, ■ As tp drainage, no solid matter would go into the river at all, as it would all be taken out, and he felt certain the.. Health Department would be quite satisfied on this head. Mr. Panton added that, w'aep freezing works, were first, established, very little was known about them, and they were run "so-so.” We didn’t know .any. better, then, hut we had learned, and, better methods had. been continually adopted all along the line, and the methods -to be followed in the new works would-be found to bo the best of all. The motion to grant the license was: then- put, and carried unanimously.
