The Minister of Defence- made refer.eticb yesterday. afternoon to , the, mention, by-the member .for Wairarapa a few days ago, of a report that the Maoris had-nearly broken out in'mnt-inv on a troopship in. the Mediterranean. , Mr Alien stated that he was . very pleased to be able to state that-there was no truth- in.tluv suggestion whatever,' What- -happened was that the skijys crew wore stealing food, and sell-, ■ng it to tho troops on board, including British regiments,- as .well as Maoris. Tho chief ■ steward - was to blame,-.- and was imprisoned' by-the officer in cortimand of the- troopship. .v , The Minister added tho hope that members would, in future, first com-, munioate. any - rumour reflecting on ■ the honour of our. troops, European or Maori, to himself before making a statement m tho House.
