ORCHESTRAL CONCERT TO-NIGHT. The Wanganui Orchestral Society’s second concert of the, season will be held in the Opera House to-night (Monday) at 8 o’clock. The programme to be submitted is an excellent one 7 included in ; the orchestral pieces being “Sympony in . G major” (Haydn), “Rosamunds Overture” '(Schubert), and “imperial March” (Elgar). The orchestra have bcen- prac- 1 tising assiduously, and, under the able conductorship of Mr Louis Cohen, should acquit themselves in their, usual efficient manner. Mrs Peter Lewis will add to the enjoyment of the concert Svith her | vocal items, “Nymphs and Fairies” (Bernberg) and “My Garden” (Mallinson). . Master Haydn Murray will play “Violin | Concerto, No. 7” (De Beriot), and this ' item will no doubt evoke enthusiasm. Altogether the concert should be a splendid musical treat. Tickets may be had at the Opera House to-night—3s and Is. i A sale of work organised by the Church of England Ladies’ Guild, was held at Gonvillc on Saturday afternoon in aid of the church funds and the Belgian Food Fund. There were fancy, plain, produce and Belgian stalls, all of which were well patronised. Competitions were held and afternoon tea was served. Mr Charles Burnett contributed music when the function was continued in the evening. The work outlined for Australia and New Zealand in connection with the Sudan United Mission, by' Dr. Karl Kumm, when he visited Wanganui some years ago, has come into existence. Sir Reginald Wingate, the Sirdar, assigned territory near Fashcda, on the Upper Nile, among tho Diukas, and the first station has been open for nearly a year. There is a distinguished Otago scholar, Mr Mill, on the staff, as well as three Australians, including an Anglican clergyman from New South Wales, and a doctor and his brother from Adelaide. Tho successful settlement at Melut has been due in a great measure to the. ungrudging go:dwi!l and practical interest of Bishop Gwynne of Khartoum. Wo understand that the annual meeting is to be held ,on December 7, and that the organising secretary for Australasia, Mr D. N. MacDiarmid, also a New Zealander and Otago graduate, is to visit the town early in 1915, with the slides illustrative of his travels from Cairo to Uganda. A highly successful sale of work and swimming sports were held on Saturday afternoon at the Girls’ College, the proceeds being devoted to the Phuiket Society and the Belgian Relief Fund. The function was largely patronised. A fine exhibition of sewing, painting and writing, including postcards received from girls in France, was made by the College pupils. The sports were exceedingly interesting, and much enjoyment was had. A busy time was spent at the various stalls. Afternoon tea was dispensed and a happy period concluded. Members of the Chamber of Commerce are reminded of the quarterly general meeting to be held in the Borough Council Chambers to-night (Monday), _ at 8 o’clock. Tho Council will meet in tho same place at 7 p.m.
