Campbell, Chegwidden, Benefield (sk;), 22; Poynter, Cocks, F. S. Parkes (sk.), 21. The Shield game, St. John’s v. Patea, was played at Patea on Wednesday last. It was arranged to play the two rounds on the one day. The St. John’s won the morning game, and Patea were successful in the afternoon contest. On Saturday next St. John’s meet Taihape on the Wanganui Club’s green. WANGANUI DISTRICT SHIELD MATCH. TAIHAPE v. GONVILLE. Two rinks each from the Taihape and Gonville Clubs played their first match ,in the District Shield Competitions on Saturday on the Taihape green. The visitors were quite unable to get the length of the local green and were easily defeated, the scores being as follows”, Taihape players being mentioned first: Hesketh, Thurston, Wilson, Wrightson (sk) 24 v. Allen, J. B. Gilberd, Rice, Nixon (sk) 18. Evans, De Luen, Neagle, McKenzie (sk) 27 v. Symes, Follett, Jones, Ogilvie (sk) 8. In the latter rink the visitors did not score a' poiht till the twelfth head, when their opponents were 19, and on the play' of the home team had no possible chance of winning. The play in the other rink was more even. On the twelfth head, the scores were 13 all, and later on 18 ■ all. In returning thanks for the entertainment of the visitors, Mr T. H. Nixon complimented the winning rinks, and said they had no doubt proved the better men on the day’s play, and he hoped the positions would be reversed when they met again on the Gonville green. The president of the Taihape team congratulated Mr Nixon’s rink on their play, and said that Mr Ogilvie was opposed by undoubtedly their best skip, and the green was of course new' to both links. The local players were looking forward with pleasure to their visit to Wanganui on Wednesday and Thursday, on which latter day they hoped to he able to play a return with Gonville and also meet the St. John’s team. GONVILLE CLUB. The weather was very windy and cold on Saturday, but there was a good mus- . ter on the green. Three of the full rink competition matches were played, with the following results:—- . Saunders, Nicholl, Atkins, Moutray (sk) 16. Butler, Hatherley, Bowater, Flower (sk) v. Steel, Jackson, Martin. Allsopp (sk) 23. ' ROWING. WANGANUI ROWING CLUB, The first races of the season, club fours and novice pairs, were commenced on Thursday evening, with the following results:—Fours: E. Gilbert defeated H. Northover somewhat easily by two lengths, and F. D. Banks won from 11. R. Jones by a like distance. Some good' contests resulted in the pairs. Mackay defeated Eaine, and followed up his sue-, cess by beating Owen, who had won from McLeod the previous evening. Brinkman also defeated Dennehy. Tire final for the “Club Fours’.’ was rowed on Saturday between F. D. Banks (str), A Collier, A. Cox and J. Whyte and E. Gilbert (str), , A. D. Murphy, E. McDonald and M. McArtney. The former crew were successful after a very good race. The Novice Pairs final will be rowed on Tuesday evening. Entries for the “Wray Eights” close on Saturday.
