THE RUGBY CAVE. SATURDAY’S MATCH IN SYDNEY. Press Asiocia'.ion—Telegraph—Copyright. Received July 10. 9.15 a.m. S\ ONE V, July 10. The New Zealanders have selected Pauling, the coach of the N.S.W. team, as referee for Saturday’s match. NWW. V. NEW ZEALAND. By “DODGER.”

To-morrow the Now Zealand tor.rn will open its tour i;i Australia with a match at Sydney against the pi. k ol New Smith Wales. Sydney writers claim that the N.S.W. team is a very strong one. as the standard of play amongst Rugby players over there has improved. Tile critics agree in declaring' that the form shown against Queensland lately was of a high class, and hopes are apparently entertained that the Now Zealanders will have their colours lowered. Ooat stress is laid on the fact that the N.H.W. team which, visited New Zealand last year had a lugger measure of success than any previous team from across the Tasman, iso far as the match placed here was coimerned. the writer failed to notice any di-tiuct improvement in the play of f!ie eisi.ors. and it was very surprising that they won as many matches as they did. It is certain that had they ni-'t such strong opposition in the Dominion as other visiting teams had done, thev wouhl not have had such a good record . It is fairly safe to say that the standard of phiv in New Zealand is not, generally sneaking, so high as it used to he, and I do not believe that the team now in AnsTa’i 1 ' is nearly equal to former “All Black’’ combinations. True, the N.Z. team which \ isit-ed California last season put no a great record, but the opposition was weak, a fact which has hern n\ evleoked bv many who have w-K----len of their deeds there as comparable

■••ith Cm dm p's of the original “All •Backs,” Kti’l. though it is very doubtful whctlier the present N.Z. team is as strong as other Maoriland comb'natiuns which ham \ ixiGnl Australia, there is good reason to hone that the Dominion’s iepre.sentaTives will win to-morrow. At the sum ' fj.-np the game should be very even one, us it is likely that the New South Welshmen will prove that they have modi' some advance, while it may b A ihat the standard of play amongst our best is not un to that of a f"W years age. New Zealanders have so far p,"-ngp<| to rise to t-i.„ ppcaM'n when their supremacy at Rugby has beep challenged, and let us hope they will do so to-morrow. TO-MORROW’S CUP MATCH. KAIERAU v. PIRATES. Rugby enthusiasts should roll up in strong force on the Rec. to-morrow to witness the Senior Chip match between Kaierau and Pirates, ns it promises to be the finest came seen here this season. The Pirates have been training 1 hard with a view to turninu the tables on the maroons, and as they intend putting in their strongest team, they may be depended upon to make a bold bid for victory. Kaierau wil lalso be strongly represented, and on the form they have shown so far are sure Co keep the blacks very busy. There is every prospect of a fast, open game, and the spectator,s should bo treated to a really fine display of Rugby football.
