CONDITIONS IN WANGANUI

LABOUR DEPARTMENT’S MONTHLY REPORT.

The report for June of the local office of the Laoour Department has been received, and is as follows:

Building Tiades.—Bricklaying: Good, no men out of employment. Garpentry and Joinery: ilicrc is a demand for men m the country. All local men are well employed. Tainting: Tair. Trade lias been a little quiei, but no shortening of hands was found necessary. Plastering: i’air. Plumbing and • Oasfittiug: Good. \\ oik is steady, and no men are idle. Woodworking Trades. Box-making: Slack, cabinermaking and Upholstering: Fairly busy. Some factories are working ouiy on stock, and no tradesmen are out of employment. Coopering: Quiet. Sash and Boor Factories: An improvement in the joinery branch is reported, but won; in tr.e yards is still a little slack. Woodturning: Fair. _ Engincei ing Trades. Bnilcrmakhig: Fair; no men idle. Fitting and Turning: Busy. Five or four good nun could be placed at the Railway Workshops. Iron and Brass Moulding: Fair. Leather Trades.—Bootmaking (repair sliops): Busy. All shops have pleiuy of work on hand. Saddlery and Haiucssmaking: Quiet. Conditions in this trade arc not satisfactory, and it is with difficulty that men are kept in constant employ mint. * Clothing Trades.—Dressmaking and millinery have been a little quieter. Slnrtniakiug is busy. Tailoring (order) was good during the earlier part of the mouth, but slackened off recently. An improvement is anticipated during the coming month.

Retail Trades. Clothing; Sales in winter clothing have been godd, and the turnover is quite up to the standaTd. Boots: Normal. Drapery: Occupiers express themselves satisfied with the amount of business transacted. Groceries: Normal.

Printing Trades. Bookbinding and Printing: Fair, just sufficient work to keep regular hands employed. Meat Fieczing Trades. — Very few hands aro at prcscnt'employcd at tne local factoiics, and work is confined to killing for local consumption, uml to repairing and renovating the works in' preparation for next season.

Coaciihuilding Trades.—Blacksmithing: Fairly busy. Coach and Carriage Building: Work is confined principally to repairs. Some shops are working on stock jobs to keep regular hands, going.

Cycle and Motor Trades. — Flic motor industry is very busy. Expert mechanics are in demand.

Agiicultural Operations. Farming, DaLying, etc.: Dairying is verj quiet. There has been a demand for ploughmen, and a number of Lush contracts have been let.

Snrdiies.—Biscuit and confectionery trades arc very busy. Brickmaking.— There is a good demand for locally-made bricks, and men in this industry arc making good tiinc_

Uuskillod Labour.—There have bean fewer callers for employment than during the previous month. Various local works have been put in hand, and men offering have all been employed. Fifteen men were assisted to employment— nine to Government works and six to private employment.
