ANNUAL MEETING. The thlrtv-first annual meeting of the Y ungnuni Caledonian Society was held in the Newmarket. Hotel last night. Mr H. G. MeXiven presided over a fair attendance. The office ot secretary will be filled later. Annual Report—The annual report, which was adopted, stated that the Society had just held its own during the year. The receipts Irom the sports were £3B less than the previous year, due largely to the number of sports'held just prior to the meeling. Trophies—Messrs MeXiven, McKenzie Forbes, Coneland, and Nettleship promised trophies for the coming season. Tne Scotsdi Element—Mr .1, Driver resigned .from the committee, giving as his reason that he considered the Society was getting away from the obieots for ’which it was formed. The Scotch element, he slid, was decreasing. A discussion followed this announcement. Mr Min'remarked that as years’ mssH by it, would become increasingly difficult to get people in t'ne Roeiety who were born in Scotland, The descendants must take their place. Mr Xettloship said that four rears ago the same matter cropped up. The experiences of several big towns were Piloted. In Dunedin, a Scotch settlement, they could not get a sufficient numImr of Scotchmen to fn- m a Society. Thev had to take in any other gentlemen they could get. In a smaller town like Wanganui lacy could not expect to keep the Society entirely Scotch. The di-enssion closed with Air Driver saying that he only expressed ],i s views, and that he thought the Society should be entirely Scotch.
