After long negotiations on the question who is to be responsible fof “wharfiugering” in the port of Melbourne, a setileaent seems to be looming (says the Age). The bodies concerned are the Melbourne Harbour Trust Commissioners, the importers, and the oversea shipping companies. Recently the chairman of the Harbour Trust, Mr C. F. Holder., annonnetd that it was likely that the ampowners will accept all responsibility for goods landed on the wharves until the consignees or their agents accept delivery. It appears that Mr Holden has prepared an agreement to have a currency of. twelve mon.hs, but it has yet to be ratified by the importers. Should the importers refuse to accept it, the Harbour Trust will assume the responsibility of wharfingering. In brief, the agreement provides that the agents for oversea vessels are to accept delivery of all cargo and stack it in cargo delivery sheds provided by the Harbour Trust, accepting all responsibility for its safety until the consignees remove it. A conference of the parties concerned is to be held shortly, in order to determine what charges tie shipowners’ agen's will hj» entitled to make for the work.
