■ NORTHERN LEAGUE'RUGBY. SENIOR. ST. JOHN’S (13) v. EASTERN (10). There was only a sprinkling of spectators at the Racecourse on Saturday afternoon to witness the inauguration of the Northern League Rugby contests. The. first of these was between St. John’s and Eastern teams, victory resting with St. John’s by 13 points to 10 after a very evenly contested game. i 'JUNIOR. ■ ■■. ;' r ■ ' 1 The junior match did not eventuate. THE RUGBY GAME. SATURDAY’S CONTESTS. Although the senior fixtures are not to be commenced hritil next Saturday, tne lower grade contests were played, arid those on the Rec. attracted a very fair attendance of spectators. : RESULTS. 1 JUNIOR GUP. SCHOOL (16) v. WANGANUI (6). This was the principal attraction on the Rec. Collegiate School attacked .warmly-from the outset, and playing fine open football, ran out winners by 16 points to 6, after a hard fought 1 game. ; Mr T. P. Souter controlled the | game. '.: , ( KAIERAU v. PIRATES. Only a handful of Kaierau players rolled up, and the game consequently ; went to Pirates by default. KAIERAU (40) v. TECHNICAL uOniLoiiGE (0). These teams met on the Technical College ground, but from the kick-off there was only, one team in it, and that was Kaierau, who succeeded in piling up -40 points to their opponehts’ nil. Mr Geo. Brown was the referee. PIRATES (17) V. WANGANUI (0). This was a fair game. Although the match was contested hard throughout Pirates won.by 17 to nil. Mr R. Greenwood controlled the game. THIRD CLASS. OLD BOYS (12) v. SCHOOL (6).. This encounter proved, to be most strenuously fought. The first was vigorously : contested, and when .halftime was taken neither side had an, advantage so far as the score was concerned, the points being six each. After the teams had crossed over the superior condition of the Old Boys soon legan to'fell, and another half dozen points■ vtitre added per' the medium, of two tries. The latter half was all in favour of Old Boys, but no further, score, was. recorded, Old Boys winning by 12 points to 6. Mr . T. T. Bell refereede. FOURTH GRADE' PIRATES (.19)-■ v. Y.M.QiA. (0). Starting fhreq men 'short, Y.M.C.A. , were handicapped, arid in the first half 14 points, comprised of three tries, one converted, and a penalty goal, were rung on against them. The second half was more even, a converted try being added by Pirates, who eventually won by 19 points to nil. Mr D. G. Moore carried the whistle. KAIERAU (3) v. SCHOOL (0). A very even game eventuated in the meeting of these two teams on the Collegiate School ground, the 'first half going without any score being recorded. It was not until just on time that Kaierau' were awarded a penalty, and the kick being successful, the maroons left the field winners by three points to nil. Mr Hague Smith controlled' the gaine.; REPS’.'PRACTICE MATCH. , On Rec. N&. 2; ground the team selected to do battle for Wanganui against Taranaki on Wednesday next played a match with a B team. Twelve of the reps attended, the absentees being Batley and H. and F. Collier, who could not reach town in time to participate.- The B team was strengthened „by, the inclusion of Hegglun and !v Green,-two of Rangitikel’s best forwards, and both acquitted themselves with credit. For such a game, and taking into consideration the fact, that it was the first time; the rep. fterim had been together, the display-'was really good, and although the reps, won by 16 points to 10. the B team made them go , for it.
