By “ACHILLES.” Nominations for the Brighton Hurdles, Easter Handicap, St. George’s Handicap, and Autumn Steeplechase, to be decided at the Auckland Racing Club’s autumn meeting, close with the secretary, Mr J. F. Hartland, to-night at 9 o'clock. AVhen Tiresome fell during the running of the AVangamii Stakes, she was so badly knocked about that doubts arc expressed a"s to her ever racing again. The daughter of Seaton Delaval was running well forv. ard when the mishap took place, and the prospects-of her talcing a hand in tho huish were, decidedly favourable. The victory of lownit in the Newmarket Handicap on Saturday came as a surprise, for at latest .advices from , Australia he was at a long price in the betting. Last season lownit did most of his racing in South Australia, but his fpign there was hardly good enough to suggest his victory in an event like the Newmarket Handicap. Although nothing has been made public, it is understood that the stewards of the Wanganui Jockey Club questioned tho running of a horse owned by a prominent owner at their recent, meeting, and that a severe caution was administered. AVhy the finding has been suppressed it is hard to say, but probably particulars will be available later.—Auckland Star. Wallace, who sired Wallaloo, got second berth in the Australian Cup in 1896, the winner turning up Idolater. Lurline (1875), Lochiel (1880), and Havoc (1895), who were all got in New Zealand, have their names inscribed upon the roll of winners in connection with the contest. Nelson ran second to Trident in 1887, Carbine occupied a similar position to Lochiel two years later, and Strathmore and Stcrncliaser were next best to Highborn and Portsea respectively in 1892 and 1893. A mistake crept into last night’s notes rc AVallalo’s victory in the Australian Cup, it being stated that Hector Gray was the first New Zealand horseman to ride the winner of that race. Aa a matter of fact AVally Clifford rode Lochiel when the latter horse won in 1889 after a great race with Carbine. At the Australian Jockey Club’s meeting a’ Easter we may expect to hoar of him icnewiiiT hostilities with Hera goon. who is specially in reserve for the big Sydney fixture. It seems rather surprising that so shrewd a judge as I. Earnshaw should have sold llr.dnoy just because he had failed to beat 8.-ragqou in the Derby contests. Beragoou, though a brilliant galloper, has more than once been suspected of unsoundness, a fact which was worth taking into serious consideration in sizing up Radnor’s prospects. The chance of seeing these two colts in action again should, add interest to the racing at Raudwick next month. Raduore’s sire, Earlston, is an imported horse by Love Wisely son of Wisdom) from Monday; by Weulock—Settling Day, by Doncaster— Vex, a sister to Galopin. Biuletta, the dam of Radnor, is by AA’allace— La Tos:a, by Robinson Crusoe—Nightmare. Radnor is therefore a member of a notable family, which has produced many big winners in Australia and New Zealand. Burlet a i; a sister to the Victoria Derby winner,. F.J.A., as well as to Class (dam of Bon Ton). La Notte (da. mof Nightfall Noctuitorm, and Midnight Sun) is a halfsister te Burletta, while Dreamer (dsm of Bon Hove) and Drought (dam of Sunburnt) are other New Zealand representatives of , Iho family, which also gained much fame in earlier days in Australia through the deeds of Commotion, Mentor, and Wake-' ful.
