During investigation at the Magistrate’s Court, of charges against a clerk named Athol McCaul, of embezzling over .6600 belonging to his employers, Qollin and Co., it transpired that accused’s system was to draw a cheque for an amount larger than the duty payable, and although the cheque was marked not negotiable, ho wohld be paid the balance in cash, sometimes substantial amounts. An expert giving evidence, said that the system adopted by the Customs was a • danger to the Commercial community and was "rotten to the core.”
