The Morning Post interviewed the High Commissioners in regard to the Pacific in view of the opening of the Panama Canal. Sir George Reid said the “white Australia’ ' policy was purely the instinct to maintain racial integrity. Some Englanders were antagonistic, but they would understand if Asiatics landed at the London docks and worked beside Englishmen. The policy did not prevent Australia feeling i hr. greatest respect for the good qualities of other races, and they had so informed the Japanese Ambassador and the Chinese Minister. The Hon. T. Mackenzie said that whatever direction the teeming millions on the East extend, trade must come against the younger nations—Canada, the United States, Smith America, Australia, and New Zealand.
