A TRAIN SMASH.

SEVERAL CARRIAGES DAMAGED. (Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, July 24. The Main Trunk express from Wellington, while shunting at Ohakuno, owing to a mistake at the points crashed into a standing train. Two carriages were ,telescoped, and, four others damaged. They had to he left behind. Five passengers were on tho platform of one of the carriages which were telescoped. Three were hurt, but not seriously. The express arrived at Auckland two hours late this morning. PARTICULARS OF THE MISHAP. AUCKLAND. July 24. The mishap at Ohakuno arose while the refreshment car was being shunted off the express train. It was in the middle of the train, next to tho mail van, and two second-class carriages. Tho engine and nearly half the train were shunted three or four hundred yards down the line. Dunning hack to the siding at about five miles per hour the enginedriver evidently considered all clear. The train smashed into tho detached station ary dining-car, and drove it on to the goods train, and following up telescoped two second-class carriages, and damaged others, throwing the passengers about in all directions, and scattering the luggage all over the carriages. The dining car suffered most.

Several passengers who were standing on the platforms of the damaged carriages lumped clear of tho two cars, which ran into each other. The platforms were torn away; one was lifted clear of the lines and remained supported by tho floor of the other. Both cars wore full of passengers, all of whom were jolted out of their scats.
