Before the Foods Commission, Air Stead, a naturalist in tho Fisheries Department, gave evidence that twelve million pounds of fish had last year been sent to the Sydney and Newcastle markets. Often fishermen had been prevented in their own interests from sending fish to the market for iear of creating a glut. Shoals of salmon and mullet, which had been penned u»\ were allowed to escape when the market was not good enough. With better facilf ties for transit and distribution, the industry was capable of enormous expansion.
