Before the Works Commission, the Engineer of the Harbours and Rivers stated that he had experienced, no shortage either of skilled or unskilled labour. The workers liked Government jobs. A hat manufacturer stated that ho was paying £$ a week, but was unable to ~et men. If he imported men from England they would have to pay .£2O to join tho union.
