WANGANUI BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Wanganui Borouglu Council, postponed froni Tuesday last, was held last evening. Present—His Worship the Mayor, Crs. E. N. Liffiton, J. Calver, C.'W. Poynter, J. V. Holloway, M. Spurdle, ti. Spriggons, A. Robinson, J. T. Miiir.— Leave of absence was granted to Cr. Committee Reports. RESERVES.—Following was the report of the Reserves Committee, dated 12th July:—Road to Hipango Park—The committee recommend that Mr A. Ct. Muir be instructed to lay off a road line- in the best way possible to connect the park with the nearest existing road, and that x plan of same be submitted to the Department of Lands, with a request that She Minister approve of same.—Arbor Day —That the matter of arranging for planting on this day be left to the Mayor and chairman. Reserves Staff—The committee has directed the engineer to engage two casual men to' cope with the extra work requiring attention at this season of the year. —'Pho report was adopted. - WORKS.—Following was the report of the Works Committee, dated 12th July : Re naming streets —That H-lton Road (i.e., the street off Brunswick Road) be ,named Timandra Street. Liverpool Street Extension Sewer.—The engineer reports that the, sewer to connect Mr Smythc's house in Liverpool Street extension should junction with the sewer now being constructed in Bayley's Road,' and the committee recommend accordingly. Re Mr A. Burnett's application for building permit for addition to Criterion Boarding-house. —The committee recommend that the building by-laws be adhered to. Crossings over Churlon's Creek at Guyton and J.ntjestre Streets.—The engineer has been directed to have the fences on these crossings put in order. Carting contract.— Directions have been given that specifications be prepared, and tenders be called for carting metal and hire of carts.—The report was adopted, with the exception of that portion referring to Mr Burnet's application, which was referred back (o the committee.

GAS.—Following: was the report of the Gas Committee, dated 18th July:—Re extension to Queen's Avenue.—Applications for gas have been received from residents in Queen's Avenue, necessitating extension of the mains at a cost of i>22j, and on the advicri of the manager, the committee recommend the extension be carried oat. Monthly report for May.—The manager's report "for the month of May has been received. Salary.—Your committee recommend that the junior's (T). Cnrham") salary be increased 5s per week. Junior. —We recommend that, the chairman, manager, and Town Clerk consider the matter of appointing 1 an additional junior for the office, and to make an appointment if thought necessary.

Ccneral Business. TOWN BRIDGE.--Letter from Public Works Department, forwarding Mr W. S. Short's award ro cost of maintaining town bridge. (The award has already been published). Also letter from Borough •Solicitor notifying same.—Received. NEW BRIDGE.—Th-a Wanganui East Borough Council wrote, agreeing to the approaches to the new traffic bridge being constructed by day labour.—Received.

WATER TROUGH.—Mr W. Bruce notified that the Waitotara County Council was willing to erect a water trdugh at Kai Iwi, provided the borough would supply water free, which he trusted the Council would do.—Referred to the Water Committee. OBSERVATORY.—The treasurer of the Astronomical Society wrote applying for payment of the Council's subsidy of ,£3O. —Resolved to pay the amount.

GRAVEL.—Mr A. C. Lennard, attorney for Mr F. G. Leimard, wrote re suppi- of gravel from the cliff whence the supply had been taken for Duricvale Road, which the Borough engineer had seen.—Referred to the Works Committee.

rJUILDING>-Mr J. R. Foster wrote that he was enlarging Ballymcna House, Tanpo Quay, by connecting two existing building*, and asked that he be allowed to erect the connecting walls in wood instead of brick.—Referred to the Works Committee. ' BALLANCE STREET.—Several residents of Ballance Street, Aramoho, wrote asking the Council to lay on gas and water to their (residences. —Referred to the Gas and Water Committees.

LKGAL.—Various legal 'documents from the Borough Solicitor were formally dealt wiHi. COMPENSATION.—The Borough Solicitor was authorised to settle the proper basis of compensation to Mr Phillips (gas stoker), who met with an injury to a hand some time ago. GAS TENDERS.—The Gas Committee was authorised to deal with tenders for the new gts building. SEWER.—The Council passed the agreement with the Gonvillo Town Board, re the boundary sewer. Rates. A formal resolution was passed making the following rates for the current year: General rate, Is Hid in the £. Special rate, 7d in the .£, for 4J55.000 loan. Special rate, 2d in the £, for .i'l 1,500 loan. Special rate, Id in the ,rj, for JJ29.U00 loan. Special rate, fid in the .£, for St. John's loan (payable by ratepayers in St. John's district). Special rate, M in the £, for Aramoho loan (payable by Aramoho ratepayers). The above are payable-on August :. A resolution was also passed striking a special rate of 2d in the £, as a pledge for the payment of interest and sinking fund on the .£11,500 bridgo loan. Crs. Spurdle and Spriggens were appointed to sign the rate book.
