He was allowed a week iu which to find the money, Messrs Macky, Logan, and Caldwell, Ltd., the well-known warehousemen, of Auckland, have purchased the “Herald” Company’s former Taupo Quay premises, ai d have instructed Mr N. Meiili'to make the alterations necessary to make the buildings suitable for their uusiuess. We are pleased to welcome such an important firm to Wanganui, and feel sure that their enterprise will be fully justified. A destructive fire occurred at Mr PMouat’s residence, Jackson Street (behind the racecourse), about 8.45 last evening. A passer-by noticed the flames, and rung up the brigade, but the flames had too firm a hold, and the building, with its contents, was completely gutted. It so happened that the Gonville Brigade was in town practising with the Wangami’ men at the time. There was £350 insurance on the house, and XIBO on the furniture. „ arrangements arc well in hand lor the Salvation Army’s annual social meeting, which will be held on Tuesday night. Wainwright for Auckland, a large social gathering took place last evening, at which Mrs Wainwright and family were entertained, and Mrs Wainwright was presented with a handsome silver entree dish for herself, and was asked to accept, oil; behalf of Mr Wainwright, who is absent in Auckland, a case ol brushes. 'Pile presentation was made on behalf of the company by Mr H. Purser. In appropriate terms he referred to the many estimable qualities of Mr and Mrs IVainwright, who, he said, had by their kindness of heart and convivial dispositions, endeared themselves to a very large circle of .friends. While regretting extremely their departure from" Wanganui, Mr Purser wished Mr and Mrs Wainwright every success in their new home, and assured them of the eternal .friendship of the friends they had made in Wn ■ uanui. Mr Bert Wainwright feelingly acknowledged the gifts on bejialf of his father and mother, and the gatherum broke up with “Auld bang Syne” and throe hearty cheers for the- Wainwright family.

A concert was held in the Gonville Hall last evening in ai dof. the funds of the Baptist Church in that suburb. Ther A was a largo attendance, and the various items on the lengthy programme of 25 numbers wore capitall- rendered and hear tily applauded by those present. The feature of tbf> concert was the contributions by the children, who were trained by Miss Olberg. / These included action songs, fan song and drill, and a lioral march, which reflected credit on the instructress. Other items included two tastefully played selections bv the City Band, under Bandmaster Buckley: songs by Mrs Hamblv, Misses A. Bowator and Randal, and Messrs A. Rea and F. We.bb-Toacs; -instrumental baritone solo, Mr Jenson; violin duet, Misses I. Olberg and I. Jones; ; piano solo, Master Ray Mailman, a little dot who acquitted himsclfadmirably; pianoforte duet, Misses Falkncr and Barkinan; vocal duets, Mr and Mrs Shearsby: recitations, Mr F. W. Anslev, Misses V. Yates, and M. Huston; ’cello solo, Mr L. Randal; and a -oral quartette by Mrs Howe, Miss Holland, and Messrs Carrad and Kelly. Hearty votes of thanks were passed to the performers and to Miss Olberg, who arranged the programme.
