SOUTH ISLAND RAILWAYS.
(Per United, Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, March 31. The Hon. R. McKenzie opened a bridge over the Waiau, above Cheviot, vesterdav. 'Dio structure, which cost .£20,000, will carry the South Island Main Trunk line, and in tho meantime provides a safe outlet for settlers north of Hie river. At a social function later the Minister declared that tho line would be pushed on rapidly, /The Midland Railway, apart from the tunnel, should he completed in eightceh tnoAihg. and the Government would then be a bio to give greater attention to the Christ-church-lllenheim line.
To-day Mr McKenzie is inspecting coun. try between Cheviot and Kaikoura, and returns to Christchurch to-morrow, and goes on to Wellington on Sunday.
