The number of eight hour shifts have been considerably increased. It was cabled last month that Scottish colliery-engine keepers had resolved to strike unless granted an eight-hours’ day. Tiie Minister of Labour is intervening in the threatened strike at Alberta, British Columbia, of miners, and is hopeful of preventing a crisis. IRONWORKERS’ DISPUTE SETTLED. MELBOURNE, March 30. Recently the Iron Workers’ Society demanded an all-i’ound increase of a shilling a day in wages. A conference resulted in an amicable arrangement, city employees receiving an advance of sixpence, ami country employees, who have been receiving less than the ruling rates, an advance of 2s to 2s 6d daily.
