'TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —The Chief Enumerator is not, I believe, in town, and therefore I take the liberty of replying to Mr H. C. Field's let-
ter in to-day J s issue. I have known Mr Field as-one of our most esteemed citizens, and a gentleman of high professional ability. Is Mr Field rubbing in a If so, I can assure him that the lot of a sub-enumerator will be doubly hard. Therpare people to whom all written instructions are an unknown language. So that thfl skein of trouble can be unravelled, It think the definitions to the letters E., 0.,' A., W., W.N. given may help those who think they are a Chinese puzzle: E.—An employer of labour, either great or small. O.—A person who employs no labour. Hn works by himself. A.—Employing labour—such as wife, relative, or person—without any definitp pay. W.—Speaks for itself—an employee op salary or wages. W.N".—lf an employee, either wages ar salary, at the time of taking the census, is (except in cases, etc.) in no permanent' employment, it must bs stated. For instance, a clerk, bricklayer, carpenter, or labourer who has been unemployed as week previously to the taking of the census is W.N. ' ' j Surely.on the degree column an ordinary man can understand the definitions- They <"re as plain as can be: C.R. for cannot read. R. for read only. R.W. for read and write. These are the definitions for the English language. Then the signs R.F., R.W.F., clearly denote that the person has been educated in a foreign country. Could anything be plainer? There is no definition of R.W. required under religious denominations. It ir asked and required that all persons qliould state the correct app'elation of their religion—not, say, Protestant, Nonconformist, etc.—l am, etc., SUB-ENUMERATOR.
