A first-offending drunk was convicted and ordered to pay costs and cab hire at the S.M. Court this morning. Captain Mclntyre, confirm the last finding of a minimum depth of 18 feet on the bar. it should be remarked that this minimum depth is confined to a narrow ledge oi crest, on either side of which the channel bottom slopes away sharply to at least 2fect, with, of course, a much greater dentil in many places. It is believed that this ledge is amenable to scour, and that as the walls are extended and the scour increases, it will be cleared away by the strength of the current. The Baptist laymen’s missionary movement held its annual general meeting last evening. Mr E. Howe, president of the local branch occupied the chair. Affairs in connection with the movement were considered, but further discussion' was postponed pending the arrival of literature dealing with the latest methods of work among men. Mr \V. S. Ferguson having resigned his secretaryship, the question oi procuring a successor was left in the hands of a committee.

-At the present time the special missionary deputation of the South Sea Evangelical Mission, Dr Deck, is touring New Zca laud, and arrives in Wanganui on Satur day night nest. The working among the islanders of the Solomon Group and other islands of the Pacific was really commenced in -Queensland among the Kanaka? by Miss Florence Young, Dr Deck’s aunt Ihe laws of the Australian Commonwealth ordered the deportation of the Kanakas and so successful had the work beer among them that at their urgent rcqucsl missionary teachers followed them.
