Clifford’s team for the Manawatu meeting; including Masterpiece, Counterfeit, and Big Blast, are expected to arrive at Awapuni in charge of H. Cutts towards the end of the week.
The New Zealand Cup winner Bridge, who has been allotted Bst 71bs in the Sydney Cup, a £4OOO race to be decided next month, is stated to have improved a lot in looks since he arrived in Sydney. A good jumper ought to pay his way in France just now, as according to the correspondent of a London ournal, the Societe des Steeplechases has’allotted £143,280 for jumping races in France this year. Arthur Birch, the English cross-coun-try horseman who rode Moifaa when he won the Liverpool Grand National, died recently in England. For the four years preceding his death Birch had lived with a broken back-bone and the lower portion of his body paralysed, the result of an accident sustained while riding in a hurdle race at Gatwick.
