CERTIFICATE PROTECTION SOCIETY A society named the British Mercantile Masters’, Officers, and Engineers’ Certificate Protection Society. Limited, has been formed. The name is rather formidable, says Syren and Shipping, but the objects seem per contra both simple and sensible. Briefly, the aim of the society is to cover, to a reasonable extent, any master, officer, or engineer against susEension or cancellation of his certificate y the judgment of a board of inquiry or naval court. Such suspension or cancellation may, of course, be the result of accident or negligence on the part of a responsible subordinate, and not due directly to the action of the chief. Provision is also made for paying a weekly compensation to such assured as may be detained on shore to attend inquiries, thus, losing regular pay. The annual premiulns, which are graded as between masters and chief engineers and officers and junior engineers, are moderate in tne extreme. Benefits are also graded. The society have started under good auspices with a. responsible and practical Board. The registered office is Colonial House, Water Street, Liverpool, and the secretary is Mr. Aug. Quinn.
