■N.S.W. RUGBY UNION. AMATEURISM v PROFESSIONALISM. Press Association.—Telegraph.—Copyright. Received March 28, 9.25 a.m. : ' SYDNEY, March 28. At the annual meeting of the New South Wales Rugby Union, Mr McMahon, in moving the adoption of the report* said that last year the Union undertook great things which resulted in financial loss, and at the present time they were in trouble. He was confident they would overcome the existing crisis from an amateur point of view. Amateurs were not dead by any means, and he was firmly of , opinion that they would get back to their! original position. There was a strenuous time ahead. They were better without men who looked to the gates, for men who deserted for the sake of thirty shillings per day would desert to someone else for thirty-one shillings. By -arid bye -they would get back and the public who were leaving them, because of statements in, regard to the Rugby Union being “off colour,” they were scuttling the Rugby Union game. Other speakers were eniially_ optimistic that amateurism would regain its position. One alleged that sixteen players were bought over for RIOO each. Thereis every clxahcs of the Old Boys entering the lists again this season, and a meeting is called in the school- library for to-morrow evening at 7.30. Entrance wall be through the gymnasium door.
