The Hobart Mercury has something to say about the Flora, now being converted into a collier at Port Chalmers: —“The Flora was originally built in England in 1882 for tbe purpose of carrying cattle from Hull to Hampton. In the same year a cablegram was received from the Tasmanian Steam Navigation Company asking for a vessel suitable to replace the s.s. Tasman, which had been wrecked. The Flora “was requisitioned, and converted into a passenger-carrying vessel, and despatched to Tasmania, where she arrived in 1883. She was then engaged in the Sydncy-Hobart trade, and when the T'.S.N" Company amalgamated with the TJ.S.S. Company of New Zealand the vessel. ' with others, was made over to the latter company. After leaving the service. between Hobart and Sydney, the steamer was put on to the New Zealand coastal trade, and since then has been used in practically all of the company’s services."
