Mr W. Hartley, of Snringston South, has Just threshed a paddock of 10 acres of partridge pease, which returned 88 bushels per acre. Mr Harry Parata, of Grcytown, has just returned from taking the Maori census on the East Coast. He reports (says the Carterton Daily News) that there is an increase in the tribes; and the general conditions are much improved. A good deal of land is under cultivation, and there are numerous herds of cattle and flocks of sheep. The Maoris generally are a great deal better off, and are paying more attention to the tilling of the soil. Threshing operations are now in . full swing throughout the Gore district '(says the Mataura Ensign), and the, percentage of yields is .high. Yields of 60 and 70 bushels of oats per acre are common in the Edendale district, and in one or two oases they have reached as high as 80 bushels per acre. On one farm near Otamita the yield was 91 bushels per acre. In other districts where the land is of lighter quality the average is working out at about 55 bushels per acre. On the whole, the farmers have experienced a good harvest. A correspondent writes us that a local stahlekeeper treated the residents in one of our side streets to a most unedifying spectacle this morning. A young horse, attached to a breaking-in cart, refused to move from the stable entrance, and was lashed severely by the man in the cart. Then the stableman emerged, and with a stout riding whip, thrashed the animal most unmercifully. It quite naturally did not understand what was expected of it, and was lashedi more. The marks of tho lash, directed behind the forelegs, were distinctly visible, and the incident was not improved by the stableman striking the horse across the head, and using disgusting language. .
