WANGANUI EAST DRAINAGE LOAN

“'As there have been numerous enquiries as to why tije Wanganui East water and drainage loan is net to be put before the ratepayers on 26th April, a representative of .the .‘‘Herald” obtained the following particulars from the Town Clerk for public 1 information.

The Mayor has been instructed to . take the necessary steps. The,first step is provisional approval of the loan by the State Advances Department. This was promptly obtained, and if the poll is carried the money may bo obtained at 34 per cent. The, Borough solicitor was immediately instructed to proceed, and the present position' is thus explained by him: “This loan being oyer a special area, it is necessary to have a special roll. This roll has to be prepared from the valuation roll, and when prepared must be deposited for public .inspection (see Section 3 .(d). Local Bodies’. Loans Act, 1908) before) any other steps are taken. This section therefore prevents any notification of the loan till after deposit of the roll. Then there may lie objections to the roll, which have to be heard and determined by a Magistrate. It is therefore impossible to do anything until yon have deposited yonr special roll, and it would not be wise to do anything until the roll, has been-com-pleted by the Magistrate. As the old valuation roll would be useless for the purposes of. the special, roll, it was impossible to take a poll on this loan on thcf.26th-April.” The'date'of the Assessment Court has been fixed for the 10th April, and, providing there are no objections to the special roll, tthe poll will 1 be taken in .about six weeks from that date. :/ -,
