The officials of the Wanganui Trotting Club are to be congratulated on the success which attended the first day’s racing of their annual meeting. The weather was gloriously line, and there was a capital attendance, while speculation was brisk, the amount handled by Messrs Ncylon and Spri"ge.is being £2200, as compared with £324 for the first day last year, an increase of £1682. The fields in the vaiions events were large, and the sport was fairly interesting, albeit in most of the events horses with long starts tilled the places; ■ (he back-markers evidently not trotting up to the form expected of them by the handieapper. There were six other starters, Pearlie Maid being the favourite, but she had 1o be content with second, place. In the Hammond Handicap Te Wbaiianau created a surprise by winning easily, and he paid a big dividend. The success of the locallyowned gelding, Casey, in the Cast Ice! iff Handicap was very pleasing to the very many friends of his popular owner Ur \V. Chapman), who was heartily applauded ou returning' to tlic paddock. Pearlie Maid scored in the President’s Handicap, after .-tailing off a fine effort by Ella Bell, a very promising filly. Gold Bell (by CapuletMerry Bell) won the concluding event in (rood” style, after an exciting race with Maine Mann, who was sent out favourite. The latter should soon be amongst the winners. ■ The conduct of the meeting was first-class, all the officials working most enthusiastically to ensure success, and it is pleasing to know that their efforts were so well rewarded. It will be no fault of the management of the club if trotting does not so'on come into very strong favour with the public in this district. Casey began well, and took the load early, but broke twice in the first quarter of a mile. He was iu the lead as they passed the stand, followed by Dolly W. and Gather No Moss, .The latter trotted well from thu half-mile, and with Dolly AV. appeared to be gaining at the bend ou. Casey. Hero Dolly AV. broke badly, but she and Gather No Moss came round the bend into the straight/together, some 6(J yards behind Casey, who eventually won comfortably by 30 yards; a fair third. The latter took the lead at the half-mile post, and urns never afterwards headed, winning comfortably by a length from Ella Bell, who made a big effort up the straight, and finished two lengths ahead of The Flasher. A splendid finish was fought out, victory eventually resting with Gold Bell by a length from Marae Manny Scamper being a couple of lengths away third. Time, 3.59. SECOND DAY. The club was again favoured with splendid weather to-day, when the meeting was continued. The attendance was fairly good, though not so large as yesterday, and speculation was fair. The officials were all in their allotted places, and carried out their duties in a manner which reflected credit on all concerned. The latter broke badly in the first half mile, hut then set. tied down, and trotted well, but could not get near the winner. The scratch horse was beaten a quarter of a mile. Time, 4.22. At the nix furlong post Ding Doug was in front, with Cliff second, Kotiri third. The leader was trotting in line style and had no difficulty in holding his own round past the stand the second time, Cliff and Kotiri still being his nearest attendants, with Pearlie Maid closing up. At the back- ■ Mersey bad taken second position some twelve lengths behind Ding Dong, but broke and Kotiri ran into second place. Ding Doug had a good lead coming into the straight, and had no difficulty in holding his advantage, winning by 30 yards from Mersey, who passed Kotiri a- furlong from home.
