DROUGHT IN CANTERBURY.

A SHORTAGE OF FEED. CHRISTCHURCH, March 22. ’ The long continued spoil of dry weather is having a very serious effect in all parts of Canterbury, and if rain does not soon fall the outlook for the winter will be rather dismal. Feed ha's gone off everywhere, the paddocks being bare and brown, and' tho worst feature of the trouble .is that winter as well as' suinw'er feed has gone. Farmers arc putting in green feed now to try and save the situation,. but unless rain comes soon this will make little or no difference to the growth. _ TTMARU, March 23. The heat experienced this morning was equal to midsummer, and the afternoon was sultry, with a light north-west breeze. The country is drying up, and it is feared that the rain will be too late now to do much good, as the frosts arc sure to follow a decided change. In some parts of the district the settlers have to cart water.
